HoserMobile 2- The Engine Donor

It appears that our beloved HoserMobile is in need of some serious repair. In it's existing state, she wouldn't even make it to the Autobahn and if by chance she did, her top speed on all 2 cylinders would be around 80km/hr.

We were able to nab this 1992 Geo Metro on Tuesday to act as a parts car for our HoserMobile. We'll be using the engine, transmission, windshield, starter, alternator and both front bucket seats.

Our HoserMobile needs to leave for Great Britain in about 6 weeks so we still have plenty of time to make sure she's up to the task.

We'll keep you posted.

Only 14 weeks remain until we board that plane for Manchester......actually, Regina to Toronto, Toronto to Glasgow, Glasgow to Manchester. Every day from now until July 18th will be spent waiting for a travel visa. Today we wait for our visas from The Kyrgyz Republic. They should be arriving any day now, then it's Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia and China.

Each visa requires filling out an application and sending it to the local Embassy of that country along with cash and our original passports. Each one takes from 1 week to as many as 3 weeks to return so as you can see 14 weeks may be cutting it close. There is a way to speed up the process with some countries- that being more cash. We may look at that option as we get closer to July. But for now...we wait.

What's a Hoser?

Today, the word hoser evokes - sometimes sympathetically, with gentle ribbing, and sometimes negatively - a stereotypical Canadian male, typically lower to middle class, white and English Canadian. He is especially concerned with drinking beer and watching hockey. The hoser is understood as a product of a poor and white upbringing, whether urban or rural, but never from a more cosmopolitan lifestyle. He is generally assumed to be unemployed, although he may also work in primary industry (manufacturing, mining, forestry, etc.) or as a tradesman or a manual labourer. He is typically not university-educated: if he has any education past high school, it's a college trade program. If he does go on to university, or moves to a city, he will still have preferences for "hoser" food, clothing, music, and sports, and will retain the language inflections of his upbringing.

He's often imagined wearing heavy winter clothing, usually a flannel lumberjack shirt, Kodiak boots and a tuque. He is generally a young adult to middle age, and may be somewhat aggressive given the beer and hockey, but may conversely be passive and amiable, given the beer. In musical culture, he is correlated with classic and mainstream rock music, particularly with Rush, Nickelback and the earlier, rowdier works of The Tragically Hip. If he goes out socially, it's usually to a donut shop.

A hoser's flannel shirt may also be referred to as a "Kenora dinner jacket". (Some regional variations of this term also exist, usually substituting a hoser-stereotyped local community's name in place of Kenora.) [2]

Perhaps the iconic representations of this definition of hoser in Canadian culture are Bob & Doug McKenzie of SCTV and Strange Brew. This model also profoundly informs The Red Green Show, and some sketch characters on Royal Canadian Air Farce (e.g. "Mike, from Canmore", "A Canadian Moment") and This Hour Has 22 Minutes (e.g. Connie Bloor, the Quinlan Quints). Although set in the United States, Wayne's World — which was created by a Canadian, Mike Myers — also shares some common elements with the hoser archetype.

Hoser may also refer more generically to a rude and unkempt person, similar to the more universal terms boor, slob, and lout. However, like other such terms (e.g. jerk) it can also be used in a much more general sense as an all-purpose mild insult. The term is also sometimes used outside of Canada as a mocking term for any Canadian, although this usage may be perceived as offensive because of the word's more particular meaning within Canada. (See Anti-Canadianism)

Bob & Doug McKenzie defined the term as "What you call your little brother when your mother isn't in the room."

The Hosers Official Team Band

Jason, Mike and Team Saskatchewan's official RCMP liaison, Ryan Currie, headed north to the Town of Craik last Friday night to meet with their new favorite band, "Brewster and the Roosters".

Bandmembers Bruce, Dave and Jack played a terrific set at "Flo's Bar and Grill" and even had a few residents of the cozy prairie town turning down their hearing aids. The Town of Craik will never be the same.

Dave and Jack even agreed to play a show at Ulaan Bataar for the rally's wind up party....but we'd need to fly them there in a private jet. I'm not sure we can raise the funds for that so we may be stuck listening to the soothing sounds of Kuvezin Yat-Kha's Mongolian Throat Singing.

The Hosers pay a visit to the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region for their first of many immunization sessions. The list is long but today we'll tackle Hepatitis and Typhoid Fever. Over the next few months the list will include Malaria, Rabies, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Tick Borne Encephalitis and our personal favorite- Traveller's Diarrhea. We may throw a few more in there for good measure but the above list covers the basics.

Just when we think this incredible journey couldn't possibly get any bigger the Hosers received a package from Versus which is more commonly known as the OUTDOOR LIFE NETWORK! What was in the package? Well we took a look and discovered a Non-Disclosure Agreement inside for the submission of a program or series to their network!

The agreement inside was already signed by them and asked us what kind of compensation we would seek under such a situation.

Duh, that's easy, free Pilsner for life!

It's been a harrowing week of ups and downs- exploding servers, slow computer links, thinking we were accepted only to realize we weren't, but today we were among the 50 remaining teams selected. It's a wonder Jason and I haven't been admitted to a mental health facility!...yet.

My heart was racing as I logged on to the Mongol Rally website in an attempt to snatch one of the 100 spots being released today at 1pm. I was ready at 12:30. I had practiced typing my credit card number, my passport number and even my name. At 12:59pm I entered the registration site only to get the all to familiar "This Page Can Not Be Displayed"

Only 100 spaces left! We try again March 12th at 6pm local time where they let another 50 go. I may not sleep this weekend.

It is about an hour before they re-release the first 100 spots in the 2007 Mongol Rally, and they have just gotten the website back up and working. We will be going on at exactly 1:00PM to try and secure our spot, this is nerve wracking, there is still 100 more spots open after these first 100, but we would rather know now and get it all over with, than have to wait and try again in a couple days.

Come on, all we want to do is drive a crappy car 13 000KM, through several countries, why does it have to be so nerve wracking, just to sign up for the damn thing.

Server Meltdown

So we were planning to get onto the www.mongolrally.com website yesterday and sign up for the Rally, we were surprised to find out 1 minutes before they released 50 registration slots to sign up for the Rally, that the server seemed to go down. A little background info, basically they release 4 blocks of 50 registrations for teams throughout the month of March. If you don't get one of the 200 slots, then you don't compete in the Rally. So you can see why this is important to our adventure.

Anyway, seems they grossly underestimated how many people would be trying to get in for the registration spots, as we apparently destroyed their servers. They are currently working on getting the site back up, and replacing all the old servers with new fan-dangled ones that will not explode when pushed to the limit. The Mongol Rally team, has announced they will just add the 50 spots from yesterday, to the next group of 50 to be released, so there will be 100 registration spots available one of the days instead of 50.

Massive Turnout

On Saturday March 3rd, we hosted a StirFry night at the Mongolie grill in Regina. Our goal was to sell 100 tickets at $15 each, we easily surpassed that amount on our way to 150 tickets sold and $1200 raised for our cause. This was a major success, and we would like to thank everyone that came out, bought a ticket and waited around for a table because of the massive crowd.

The food and company were great! The Hosers were amazed at how many people wanted to say "hey" and meet the two Canadian Hosers from Regina going on this wild adventure.

Thank you to everyone, that came out to support Team Saskatchewan and thank you to the Mongolie Grill for allowing us to host a great event. Look forward to seeing everyone at our next fundraiser, to be announced soon. Stay tuned to find out more information.

Hey the final stats are in for our website (mongolrally.ca) from Friday of last week. As you may have read we had a 5 minute interview on Canada AM on Friday and it went great. The boys did an amazing job, were very at-home on TV and gave a wonderful interview. We hope to have video of the segment posted to the site at some point, but that all depends on CTV. It takes a couple of days for our stats package on the website to compile, so we checked this morning and found that we had a whopping 23, 000 hits on Friday! That is nearly 10 times the amount of hits we have had in total since January 1st. As you can read below, it has been well received and we look forward to hearing from more HoserManiacs and potential sponsors. As you might of noticed (by doing the interview in front of the Mongolie Grill, while wearing the Pilsner sweaters) we are getting the word out about our sponsors, and in turn are earning every cent of the donations.

We just wanted to say a big THANK YOU! to Canada AM for giving us the time to ramble on about the adventure of a life-time.

We will be featured guests at some point during the Friday March 2nd broadcast of Canada AM on CTV. It doesn't get much bigger in Canada than a nationally broadcast breakfast program. We are very proud and hope it will generate some money for the Canadian Cancer Society, as well as get some more people out to our Stir Fry Night on Saturday. The segment should last about 5 minutes and is being filmed in Regina. Tell us what you think, and let us know if the camera truly adds 10 pounds (of if it is just the Pilsner!).

All Lit Up

We have just equipped the HoserMobile with 4 rally lights on the hood and 2 on the Impi roof tent. Thanks to Mike from Bumper to Bumper for the lights and the technical know how to get the job done. If it were left to Jason and I to figure out, my garage would have burned to the ground along with our hopes of completing the rally.

The lights will come in handy as we tear through the wind blown dunes of the Kyzyl Kum desert in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

I really like this picture ripping though some pretty rough terrain. The Mini has similar clearance to that of our Geo so if they can do it- we can do it!
